Crypto Tax in Finland 2026: Rates, FIFO, Staking and MyTax

Published March 22, 2026 ·Updated September 1, 2026 · CoinTaxReporting · 5 min read

Finland taxes most private crypto disposals as capital gains at 30% or 34%. Exchanging one token for another and spending crypto are disposals, while proof-of-work mining is earned income and staking is generally capital income. This guide follows the Finnish Tax Administration rules in force for 2026.

A gain from selling, exchanging or spending a crypto asset is normally capital income. For 2026, Finland taxes capital income at 30% up to EUR 30,000 and 34% on the portion above EUR 30,000. The higher rate is not applied to the whole amount merely because the threshold is crossed. Vero confirms the current bands in its official 2026 tax bases.

The rate applies to net taxable capital income after the deductions allowed by law, not to gross sale proceeds. Finland does not apply a separate long-term crypto rate. Holding for more than ten years can nevertheless matter because of the optional deemed acquisition cost explained below.

Which crypto events are taxable?

EventStarting treatment
Sell crypto for EUR or another official currencyCapital gain or loss
Exchange BTC for ETH or another tokenTaxable disposal of the asset given up
Pay for goods or services with cryptoTaxable disposal at euro market value
Buy and continue to hold cryptoNo disposal merely from holding
Transfer between wallets you ownNormally no disposal; keep proof of ownership

Leaving the proceeds on an exchange does not defer the event. A token-to-token exchange must be valued in euros at the time of the trade. Vero's current crypto-assets guidance includes filing instructions and worked examples.

FIFO, actual cost and deemed acquisition cost

For routine reporting, Vero's calculator uses FIFO: the earliest acquired units are treated as disposed of first. Taxpayers should retain account-level evidence if their facts support a different identification under the detailed guidance. Combine the euro proceeds with the acquisition cost and transaction expenses that directly relate to the acquisition or disposal.

An individual can use the deemed acquisition cost instead of actual purchase cost and expenses. It is 20% of proceeds when the holding period is under ten years and 40% when it is at least ten years. It is an alternative, not an extra deduction. Compare it transaction by transaction and never subtract both deemed and actual costs.

Capital losses and the five-year carryforward

A realised crypto capital loss is generally deducted first from capital gains and then from other capital income. An unused amount is carried forward for the following five years. It cannot be used against salary or other earned income. A fall in market price while the token is still held is not a realised loss.

Vero applies specific rules to negligible total disposals, bankrupt platforms, lost keys and worthless assets, so an economic loss is not automatically a deductible disposal. Keep evidence of the legal event and any recovery process. For a broader workflow, see the crypto year-end tax planning guide.

Proof-of-work mining, staking and lending

Proof-of-work mining rewards are normally earned income when the assets reach the wallet or account. Value them in euros at receipt. Direct income-producing electricity and equipment expenses may be deductible when documented, but mixed private use must be apportioned.

Proof-of-stake rewards and returns from locking or lending previously acquired crypto are normally capital income at the euro value when received. That value becomes the acquisition cost for a later disposal, preventing the same receipt from being taxed twice. Product labels do not decide the result; a DeFi transaction may also dispose of an existing token or create a new right. See the separate Nordic staking and DeFi discussion for the records these protocols require.

Crypto derivatives are not ordinary crypto disposals

Do not automatically apply the spot-crypto rules to futures, perpetuals or CFDs. Vero expressly notes that CFDs are not crypto assets: profits are capital income, while CFD losses are not deductible in Finnish assessment. The legal contract and settlement structure must be classified before a reporting engine transfers the result to a capital-gain worksheet.

How to report crypto in MyTax

  1. Calculate every sale, exchange and purchase with crypto in euros.
  2. Report gains and losses under Capital income – Capital gains and select Crypto assets.
  3. Report proof-of-work mining under Other earned income.
  4. Report proof-of-stake and lending returns under Other capital income.
  5. Check pre-completed data even when an exchange reports transactions.
  6. Keep receipts, exports and calculations for six years after the tax year.

From tax year 2026, service-provider information available to Vero expands, including foreign information exchange. That does not replace the taxpayer's duty to file complete figures. CoinTaxReporting can organise the event history, but the final MyTax entries must reflect the taxpayer's actual classification. Simple Finnish crypto gain example

A resident buys 0.5 BTC for EUR 12,000 plus a EUR 30 fee. Later, the resident exchanges it for ETH worth EUR 18,000 and pays a EUR 20 disposal fee. Using actual cost, the gain is EUR 18,000 minus EUR 20 minus EUR 12,030, or EUR 5,950. The exchange is taxable even though no euros were withdrawn. The received ETH starts with a EUR 18,000 acquisition value, adjusted for the correct allocation of transaction costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is swapping Bitcoin for Ether tax-free in Finland?

No. The BTC is disposed of at the euro market value of the ETH received.

Does Finland always require FIFO?

Vero's standard calculation is FIFO. Preserve transaction-level evidence if relying on another identification permitted by the detailed facts.

Can crypto losses reduce my salary tax?

No. Capital losses are used within capital income and can be carried forward for five years, but not deducted from earned income.

Is staking taxed only when I sell the reward?

Generally no. Proof-of-stake rewards are capital income at receipt, and a later disposal produces a separate gain or loss.
