Gemini Tax Forms in 2026: Reconcile 1099-DA, 1099-MISC and Cost Basis

Published March 27, 2026 ·Updated September 2, 2026 · CoinTaxReporting · 9 min read

Gemini provides useful tax documents, but no Gemini form calculates a customer’s complete federal tax liability. The first Forms 1099-DA delivered in 2026 generally reported 2025 gross proceeds without basis. For 2026 sales, basis reporting begins only for certain covered digital assets acquired after 2025. Transferred coins, outside wallets, staking income and unreported transactions still require a complete account-level reconciliation.

Gemini can issue Form 1099-DA for reportable digital-asset dispositions and Form 1099-MISC for eligible income. It also offers a Gain/Loss Statement, exchange transaction history, staking transaction history and monthly account statements. These files answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.

The IRS requires taxpayers to report all digital-asset income, gains and losses whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA. Gemini likewise states that it does not calculate a customer’s comprehensive tax obligation across other exchanges, DeFi and self-hosted wallets and does not prepare Form 8949 for customers.

Which Gemini tax documents may appear?

Form 1099-DA

Gemini says a US non-exempt customer who sold, converted or otherwise disposed of digital assets on Gemini may receive Form 1099-DA. For 2025 activity, Gemini reported proceeds to the IRS but not cost basis. For 2026 activity, federal broker rules require basis for covered digital assets, while basis for noncovered assets is generally optional.

Gain/Loss Statement

Gemini describes its Gain/Loss Statement as an informational document not sent to the IRS. Its estimate depends on selected basis methods and on acquisition dates and costs supplied for transferred assets. Treat it as a reconciliation aid, not a filed return or authoritative basis schedule.

Form 1099-MISC

Gemini may report staking rewards, referral rewards, bonuses, promotions and rewards on stablecoin balances in Box 3. Its current support page states a $600 platform threshold for the earlier rules and says the Form 1099-MISC threshold increases to $2,000 for 2026 transactions and later. A threshold determines platform reporting; it does not create a matching income exclusion for the taxpayer.

Transaction and account histories

The complete exchange and staking histories are essential even when tax forms exist. Gemini’s current help pages describe an XLSX download, not only a CSV. Monthly statements can help reconcile balances and detect activity omitted from a filtered export.

How to download Gemini tax files in 2026

Gemini’s US help center gives the following navigation. Interface labels can change, so retain a screenshot or export log showing the selected period.

  1. Open Account, then Settings.
  2. Choose Statements and Taxes.
  3. Open Taxes for Form 1099-DA, a Gain/Loss Statement or Form 1099-MISC.
  4. Open Transaction History for the Exchange Transaction History.
  5. Select the entire calendar-year date range and download the XLSX file.
  6. Download Staking Transaction History separately.
  7. Open the Statements tab and save each monthly account statement.
  8. Repeat the process for every entity, account or login owned by the taxpayer.

ActiveTrader’s dashboard may show only a limited set of recent completed orders. Gemini directs customers to the full Transaction History page for the broader export. Do not build a tax return from the visible dashboard rows alone.

Before the forms are generated, verify the legal name, taxpayer identification number and address in the account. Gemini directs US persons to Form W-9 procedures and non-US persons to the appropriate Form W-8 process. An incorrect taxpayer identity should be corrected with Gemini rather than hidden by an offsetting entry on Form 8949.

How Form 1099-DA changed between 2025 and 2026 sales

Sale yearRecipient statementBasis rule
2025Generally furnished by February 17, 2026Gross proceeds required; broker basis generally not required
2026Generally furnished during 2027 filing seasonBasis required for covered assets; optional for noncovered assets

The IRS defines a covered digital asset for 2026 reporting through detailed custody and acquisition rules. In broad terms, an asset acquired after 2025 in an account for which the broker provided custodial services can become covered. Coins transferred into Gemini from another exchange or self-hosted wallet often remain noncovered because Gemini did not effect and custody the original acquisition.

Customer-provided acquisition information can help Gemini select lots or create an informational estimate, but federal instructions restrict how a broker may use that information for mandatory basis reporting. A user-entered transfer basis is not automatically transformed into IRS-reported covered basis.

The Form 1099-DA guide explains the boxes and correction workflow in more detail.

From Gemini sales to Form 8949 and Schedule D

Digital assets held for investment are generally capital assets. A sale for dollars, conversion into another cryptoasset, purchase of goods or services, or other disposition can generate capital gain or loss. Buying and holding alone generally is not a disposition.

For the 2025 Form 8949, the IRS introduced boxes G, H and I for short-term digital-asset transactions and J, K and L for long-term digital-asset transactions. The category depends on whether the transaction was reported on Form 1099-DA and whether basis was reported to the IRS. Use the exact current-year form instructions rather than reusing old stock categories C and F for digital assets.

Adjusted basis generally starts with acquisition cost plus applicable transaction costs and then reflects later adjustments. Proceeds from Form 1099-DA must be reconciled, but the taxpayer remains responsible for correct basis. The Form 8949 instructions guide covers lot descriptions, dates, basis adjustments and Schedule D totals.

Transferred coins are the main reconciliation risk

A transfer between wallets or accounts owned by the same taxpayer is generally not a taxable disposition, but its acquisition date and basis move with the units. If Gemini sees only the inbound transfer and later sale, the platform may not know the original basis. Link the withdrawal from the source to the Gemini deposit using quantity, asset, date, transaction hash and fees.

Lot selection must be adequately and timely identified under applicable IRS rules. A tax application should not retroactively choose HIFO simply because it produces the smallest gain if the taxpayer did not satisfy the identification requirements. Otherwise, default ordering rules may apply.

Gemini staking and other income

Gemini states that staking rewards are reported to US participants when they become available for withdrawal. That timing reflects dominion and control: the reward’s fair market value at availability is ordinary income and generally becomes the rewarded asset’s basis.

When the reward is later sold, exchanged or spent, a second calculation compares disposition proceeds with that basis. This is not “two taxes on the same dollar”; one item measures compensation or reward income at receipt, while the other measures the later change in value.

Do not report only the amount appearing on Form 1099-MISC. Income below an information-reporting threshold can still be taxable. Conversely, an erroneous or duplicated form should be corrected rather than blindly added to income twice. Reconcile the form with Staking Transaction History and with every credit labeled referral, administrative credit, promotion or reward.

The US staking tax guide explains income timing and later basis. Historical Gemini Earn claims or distributions require their own bankruptcy analysis and should not be merged with current Gemini Staking merely because both involved yield.

Complete Gemini reconciliation workflow

  1. Import the full Exchange Transaction History for the tax year.
  2. Import Staking Transaction History and all monthly statements.
  3. Match Gemini deposits and withdrawals to outside accounts.
  4. Carry original acquisition dates and basis through self-transfers.
  5. Separate buys, sales, conversions, rewards, fees and non-taxable transfers.
  6. Reconcile sales proceeds to every Form 1099-DA.
  7. Reconcile eligible income to Form 1099-MISC.
  8. Compare the informational Gain/Loss Statement with the independent ledger.
  9. Classify short- and long-term lots and the correct Form 8949 category.
  10. Investigate missing basis, duplicate rows and unexplained balance changes.
  11. Reconcile Form 8949 totals to Schedule D.
  12. Archive source files, correction requests and final workpapers.

The crypto tax records checklist gives additional controls for multiple exchanges, DeFi and self-hosted wallets.

Common Gemini tax-form errors

Frequently asked questions

Where are Gemini tax documents located?

Gemini directs users to Account, Settings, Statements and Taxes, then Taxes. Exchange and Staking Transaction Histories are downloaded from the Transaction History area.

Does a 2026 Form 1099-DA report 2026 sales?

The first forms delivered in February 2026 generally reported 2025 sales. Forms for calendar-year 2026 sales are generally furnished during the 2027 filing season.

Did Gemini report basis for 2025 sales?

Gemini states that its 2025 Form 1099-DA reporting covered proceeds only and did not report cost basis to the IRS. The taxpayer must calculate adjusted basis.

Will Gemini report basis for every 2026 sale?

No. Mandatory basis reporting applies to covered digital assets. Older or transferred-in assets can be noncovered, for which basis reporting is generally optional.

Does Gemini generate Form 8949?

Gemini says it does not prepare Form 8949. Its Gain/Loss Statement is informational and must be reconciled with all accounts before filing.

Do I report Gemini income below the 1099-MISC threshold?

Yes, when it is otherwise taxable. Information-reporting thresholds govern the platform’s form obligation, not the taxpayer’s substantive income exclusion.

Is moving crypto into Gemini taxable?

A self-transfer generally is not a disposition, but the original basis and acquisition date must be carried into Gemini and documented.

What if a Gemini tax form is wrong?

Compare it with the raw history, identify the specific reportable error and request a corrected form from Gemini. Keep the request and use the applicable IRS reporting and adjustment instructions.
