Self-Employed Crypto Taxes: Income, Basis and Schedule C Reporting

Published March 27, 2026 ·Updated September 1, 2026 · CoinTaxReporting · 7 min read

Being paid in Bitcoin, stablecoins or another digital asset does not defer business income until the token is sold. A self-employed person generally records the US-dollar fair market value when the payment is received, then tracks that amount as basis for a separate gain or loss when the asset is later disposed of.

Report crypto received for freelance work, consulting, mining or sales: Schedule C, self-employment tax, basis, later gains, expenses and estimates.

An independent contractor who receives digital assets for services generally includes their fair market value in US dollars as self-employment income when received. The same dollar value becomes basis in the asset, provided it was included in income. The IRS confirms this in Q59 and Q60 of its digital-asset transaction FAQs.

A later sale, swap or purchase using that crypto is a separate disposition. The difference between disposition proceeds and established basis is generally capital gain or loss if the contractor held the payment as an investment. It can be ordinary when the asset is inventory or otherwise noncapital property.

Example: a designer invoices $2,000 and receives 0.02 BTC worth $2,000. The business records $2,000 of gross receipts and basis of $2,000 in that BTC lot. A later sale for $2,350 creates a separate $350 gain before fees; it does not create another $2,350 of service revenue.

Schedule C, Schedule SE and employee wages

A sole proprietor or independent contractor generally reports business gross receipts and allowed expenses on Schedule C. Net earnings from self-employment of $400 or more generally require Schedule SE for Social Security and Medicare taxes. The IRS self-employment tax page explains the threshold and calculation.

Employees paid in crypto are different. The medium of payment does not change wage status: fair market value is generally subject to withholding, FICA and FUTA and is reported on Form W-2. A business cannot avoid payroll rules by relabeling wages as tokens or calling every worker a contractor.

Investment trading gains are not automatically Schedule C income or self-employment income merely because the taxpayer trades frequently or forms an LLC. Separate services, operating activity and investment holdings.

Valuing crypto income and establishing basis

Use a reasonable, consistently applied exchange rate at the receipt date and time. Record token, units, wallet, transaction ID, USD value, pricing source and any restriction on control. A stablecoin should not be assumed to equal exactly one dollar when the executable market value differs.

For cash-method taxpayers, “received” generally focuses on actual or constructive receipt and control. Escrow, vesting, locked smart contracts and disputed amounts need fact-specific analysis. An invoice date alone may not be the income date.

Network or payment-processing fees can reduce the amount received or be a business expense depending on how the transaction is structured. If crypto is used to pay the fee, that fee asset can have its own disposition. Do not both reduce revenue and deduct the same charge.

Which crypto business expenses are deductible?

A Schedule C expense must be ordinary and necessary for the genuine trade or business. Personal and capital portions must be separated. IRS Publication 334 provides the current small-business expense framework.

Transaction costs used to acquire or dispose of an investment asset may belong in basis or amount realized instead of Schedule C. Personal trading subscriptions are not converted into business deductions by paying them from a business wallet.

Estimated income and self-employment tax

Crypto payments usually have no withholding. Self-employed taxpayers may need quarterly estimated payments for income tax and self-employment tax. Use current-year Form 1040-ES and update the projection after large token price moves or irregular receipts.

Estimated tax is based on taxable income and applicable safe-harbor rules, not the wallet's current market value. If a contractor receives $50,000 of volatile crypto and the price later falls, the original service income does not disappear; a later capital loss may be limited to capital-gain netting and $3,000 against other income. Consider selling enough at receipt to fund tax and expenses.

IRS Publication 505 contains the 2026 estimated-tax worksheets.

Mining, staking, validator and NFT activity

Do not classify every blockchain receipt as self-employment income:

Use the US staking guide and do not let an exchange event label decide self-employment status.

When the business pays vendors or workers in crypto

The recipient generally has compensation or business income equal to fair market value. The payer can have an ordinary and necessary business expense or capitalized cost, but also disposes of the crypto used. That disposition creates gain or loss based on the payer's basis.

Record gross invoice amount, token units, USD value, fee, payment timestamp and recipient. Worker classification, payroll withholding and information-return duties do not disappear because payment used a blockchain. A transfer to an owner's personal wallet is not a vendor payment and should be booked as a draw, distribution, compensation or loan according to the facts.

Forms 1099 and reconciliation

Business income is reportable even if no Form 1099 arrives. Form 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K or another statement may reflect gross amounts that include fees, duplicate platform flows or payments already recorded. Reconcile each form to invoices and wallet receipts instead of adding it on top of the ledger.

Form 1099-DA reports broker digital-asset dispositions, not the original service classification. A token received for services and later sold can therefore appear once as Schedule C income and later as proceeds on Form 1099-DA without being duplicate tax when basis is applied correctly.

For later capital sales, use the Form 8949 guide.

Sole proprietor, LLC or corporation?

A single-member LLC is disregarded by default and generally continues to use the owner's Schedule C. A multi-member LLC is usually a partnership; corporate elections change return, payroll and distribution rules. The entity choice does not by itself change investment gains into business income.

An S corporation can address service-business payroll and distributions but requires reasonable compensation for shareholder services. It does not save self-employment tax on capital gains that were not subject to self-employment tax. See the crypto LLC structure guide.

Self-employed crypto tax FAQ

When is crypto received for freelance work taxable?

Generally when received or constructively received with control, measured at fair market value in US dollars.

Is the income delayed until I sell the crypto?

No. Service income arises at receipt; a later sale is a separate gain or loss using the income value as basis.

Does self-employment tax apply?

Crypto paid for services in an independent trade or business is generally self-employment income. Schedule SE is generally required at $400 or more of net earnings.

Are staking rewards always self-employment income?

No. They may be ordinary income, but self-employment character depends on whether the activity is a trade or business.

Can I deduct all crypto software and hardware?

No. The cost must be ordinary and necessary for the business; personal use must be separated and capital assets may require depreciation.

What if the token price falls after payment?

The original business income remains. A later sale can create a separate capital or ordinary loss depending on how the token was held.

Do I report income without a Form 1099?

Yes. Information-return thresholds do not create a tax-free amount.

Does an LLC remove Schedule C or self-employment tax?

Not by itself. A disregarded single-member LLC generally continues the owner's federal reporting; other elections add their own rules.
