How to Amend a Crypto Tax Return with Form 1040-X

Published March 22, 2026 ·Updated September 1, 2026 · CoinTaxReporting · 5 min read

A missing wallet, incorrect cost basis or late Form 1099-DA can change capital gains, ordinary income and carryovers. Form 1040-X is the normal way to correct a previously filed Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR. The amendment should be built from a complete transaction reconciliation—not by adding one unexplained number to the original return.

The IRS says an amended return may be required when income, deductions, credits, filing status, dependents or tax liability change. For digital assets, common material changes include:

Do not amend merely because the IRS corrected a basic arithmetic error during processing or asked for a missing document separately. Use the IRS “Should I file an amended return?” tool when the change is administrative rather than substantive.

The deadline is not simply “three years”

To claim a credit or refund, Form 1040-X generally must be filed within the later of:

If an original return was filed before the normal April deadline, it is generally treated as filed on that deadline for this rule. Special periods can apply to foreign tax credits, bad debts, carrybacks, disaster relief and other situations. Therefore, do not calculate a refund deadline from an online article without checking the instructions for the exact tax year.

An amendment that reports additional tax is different from a refund claim. Additional tax and interest can continue to accrue; paying promptly generally limits further interest. The amendment does not erase penalties or interest automatically.

Reconstruct the complete crypto ledger first

  1. Download the return as originally filed, including every Form 8949, Schedule D and worksheet.
  2. Import every exchange, wallet, blockchain and prior-year opening lot used by the corrected calculation.
  3. Match self-transfers and remove duplicated exchange/on-chain records.
  4. Restore missing acquisition dates and costs from evidence; do not substitute zero merely because a broker did not know the basis.
  5. Separate capital dispositions from rewards, compensation, business income, gifts and non-taxable transfers.
  6. Reconcile Form 1099-DA proceeds to the corrected sale ledger without duplicating the same transaction.
  7. Compare the corrected totals with the original return and document every difference.

Our IRS digital asset FAQ guide explains the current wallet-level basis rules. The Form 8949 guide explains disposal categories and Schedule D totals.

Which forms may need to change?

Capital loss carryoverSchedule D carryover worksheet and later affected returns
Non-business staking or reward incomeSchedule 1, as applicable
Crypto received in a trade or businessSchedule C and potentially Schedule SE

File a separate Form 1040-X for each tax year. A corrected 2023 basis can also change a 2024 sale or loss carryover, so amendments sometimes form a sequence rather than a single filing.

How Form 1099-DA affects an amendment

Form 1099-DA is a broker information return, not a replacement for Form 8949 or your books and records. For 2025 transactions, many statements report proceeds without complete basis. A blank basis box does not establish zero basis. If the broker issued incorrect information, request a corrected statement and retain the correspondence, but do not ignore the filing deadline while waiting indefinitely.

Where broker proceeds differ from the corrected ledger, reconcile sale IDs, dates, asset quantities and transaction costs. The 2025 Instructions for Form 8949 include adjustment rules for selling expenses or digital asset transaction costs not reflected on the broker statement.

Step-by-step Form 1040-X process

  1. Use the forms and instructions for the year being amended, not only the current-year forms.
  2. Prepare the corrected Form 1040/1040-SR/1040-NR and every affected schedule.
  3. Enter the originally reported or IRS-adjusted amounts, net changes and corrected amounts on Form 1040-X.
  4. Explain the changes clearly. Identify the missing data source, affected forms and tax-year impact.
  5. Attach new or changed schedules and supporting documents required by the instructions.
  6. Pay additional tax promptly or select the permitted refund method.
  7. Check whether the federal change requires an amended state return.
  8. Retain the original return, corrected ledger, exchange files, notices and filing confirmation.

Example explanation of changes

“Taxpayer reconstructed digital asset transactions from Wallet A and Exchange B that were omitted from the original return. The attached corrected Forms 8949 and Schedule D add 14 dispositions, restore documented basis for 6 transferred lots and revise the capital loss carryover. Schedule 1 is also corrected for staking rewards.”

The explanation should match the actual attachments and should not include unsupported conclusions.

After filing

The IRS says amended returns generally take 8–12 weeks, with some cases taking up to 16 weeks. Status information is typically available about three weeks after submission. Avoid filing a duplicate amendment merely because the first one has not yet been processed.

Frequently asked questions

Can Form 1040-X be filed electronically?

Many recent-year amendments can be e-filed through supported software or a tax professional. Eligibility depends on the tax year and original filing; otherwise file on paper under the current instructions.

Do I attach every original crypto transaction again?

Attach the corrected forms and required schedules. Retain the full reconciliation and source records even when they are not all submitted with the return.

Does amending a return automatically create an audit?

The IRS does not describe Form 1040-X as an automatic audit trigger. A complete, supported correction is preferable to leaving a known material error uncorrected.

What if the amendment changes a state return?

Review the state’s rules separately. The IRS specifically notes that federal changes may affect state tax liability and state returns should not be attached to the federal amendment.

Can I use zero basis if the 1099-DA basis is blank?

Not merely because the box is blank. Determine basis from your own records and disclose adjustments according to the applicable Form 8949 instructions.

Before preparing the amendment, use the crypto tax reporting workflow to consolidate the original and corrected transaction data in one reproducible ledger.
