Robinhood Crypto Taxes 2026: Form 1099-DA, Basis and Filing

Published March 3, 2026 ·Updated September 1, 2026 · CoinTaxReporting · 9 min read

Robinhood changed its U.S. crypto reporting for the 2025 tax year from Form 1099-B to the new Form 1099-DA. The form reports Robinhood Crypto dispositions and can include customer-facing basis, but it does not reconstruct assets transferred from another exchange or self-custody wallet. A correct return reconciles the form to the CSV, restores verified basis and adds activity outside the custodial Robinhood Crypto account.

For 2025 crypto dispositions, Robinhood Crypto issues Form 1099-DA rather than the former 1099-B. Robinhood says the 2025 form reports gross proceeds to the IRS and may show cost basis to the customer where available, but that basis is informational for the first reporting year. Robinhood’s consolidated 1099 package for 2025 was due to be available by February 17, 2026.

The form does not determine your final tax. Gross proceeds are not gain, and a missing or zero basis for deposited crypto is not proof that the asset cost zero. Taxpayers must report all taxable transactions even when no form was issued and must correct the return calculation when the broker lacks verified acquisition history.

Form 1099-DA replaced Robinhood crypto Form 1099-B

Form 1099-DA is the federal broker information return for digital-asset proceeds. Robinhood says customers who traded digital assets in the custodial Robinhood Crypto account receive the form when their activity requires it. Securities sales remain on Form 1099-B; digital assets are on Form 1099-DA. A combined PDF can contain both, plus other applicable forms.

For the 2025 tax year:

Basis reporting phases in for applicable covered digital assets acquired on or after January 1, 2026 and disposed of later. That does not mean every 2026 deposit from another wallet automatically becomes a covered lot with verified basis. The transfer-of-basis rules and broker information available for the asset determine the result.

Use the Form 1099-DA guide to map reported-with-basis, reported-without-basis and unreported dispositions to the current Form 8949 categories.

How to download Robinhood tax documents and CSV files

In the Robinhood app, select Account, open the menu and go to Tax center. On web classic, open the Tax center directly. Select the consolidated form to view or download it. For very large files, Robinhood recommends the web interface.

The cover page contains the master account number and document ID used to import the consolidated form into participating providers such as TurboTax or H&R Block. Preserve the original PDF. Robinhood says detailed CSV transaction files for 2025 Robinhood Securities, Robinhood Crypto and spending activity become available after the consolidated forms.

  1. Download every original and corrected consolidated 1099 PDF.
  2. Download the full Robinhood Crypto CSV, not only the form summary.
  3. Export any custom account-activity reports needed to explain aggregated entries.
  4. Export Robinhood Wallet or other self-custody history separately.
  5. Retain statements showing incoming and outgoing crypto transfers.
  6. Archive the files with their download date and account identifier.

A direct tax-software import is convenient but not a reconciliation. Robinhood warns that filing-provider import limits can apply, including for large numbers of uncovered transactions. Check the imported totals against the PDF rather than assuming a successful login transferred every row.

Robinhood cost basis, FIFO and transferred crypto

Robinhood currently says it calculates crypto tax lots using FIFO. It also states that lots with unknown or zero basis from inbound transfers are closed before ordinary FIFO lots. This platform convention can produce a large apparent gain when deposited assets lack acquisition information.

Suppose a taxpayer bought 1 ETH elsewhere for $2,000, transferred it to Robinhood and sold it for $3,200. A Robinhood record with unknown or zero basis can show a $3,200 estimate. The tax return should use the verified $2,000 carried basis, producing a $1,200 gain before applicable costs. The transfer itself did not reset basis or holding period.

For the 2025 form, Robinhood provided an in-app process to enter purchase date, units and total cost for transferred crypto, with a published January 2026 deadline for sold 2025 lots. Taxpayers who missed that operational deadline still need to report the correct return based on their records. They should retain the reconciliation because Robinhood said it would not issue a 2025 correction solely for customer basis changes that were not reported to the IRS.

U.S. digital-asset basis is tracked by wallet or account beginning in 2025 under the transition guidance. Adequate identification must be made under the applicable timing and documentation rules; it is not a retroactive year-end choice of whichever lot minimizes tax. If no adequate identification applies, use the relevant default ordering rule consistently.

How to reconcile Robinhood Form 1099-DA

  1. Confirm the year and account: Do not mix a joint, individual, retirement or securities account.
  2. Match gross proceeds: Tie the 1099-DA total to the detailed crypto CSV and explain aggregation.
  3. Restore transferred basis: Link each deposit to the original exchange or wallet acquisition.
  4. Carry holding period: Use the true acquisition date, not the Robinhood deposit date.
  5. Check FIFO application: Identify unknown-basis lots closed first and confirm the tax-return lot result.
  6. Add unreported activity: Include self-custody swaps, spending and other exchanges.
  7. Separate rewards: Do not add 1099-MISC income to sales proceeds.
  8. Review corrections: Retain Delta pages and use the latest corrected form.

Robinhood’s aggregated lines can reduce the size of the statement. Aggregation does not remove the need to retain transaction-level evidence. If you report a summary where IRS instructions allow it, preserve the detailed statement and reconciliation supporting proceeds, basis, holding period and adjustments.

Do not file zero basis by default: Missing basis is a data problem, not a substantive tax conclusion. Reconstruct it from purchase confirmations, prior income records, transfer hashes and the sending account.

Robinhood staking and reward income

Robinhood may issue Form 1099-MISC when eligible crypto rewards reach the published $600 reporting threshold. The threshold determines information reporting, not whether the income is taxable. A $50 reward can still be income.

Under Revenue Ruling 2023-14, a cash-method taxpayer generally includes proof-of-stake validation rewards at fair market value when the taxpayer gains dominion and control. Record the date and time the units became available to sell, exchange or transfer, the quantity and a consistently applied U.S.-dollar price source.

The included value generally becomes basis for the later sale. If Robinhood reports $300 of reward income and the taxpayer later sells those units for $360, the two events are $300 of ordinary income and a separate $60 capital gain before costs—not $660 of income and not $360 of all-gain proceeds.

Whether an activity belongs on Schedule 1, Schedule C or another form depends on why and how the taxpayer earned it. A platform label does not decide whether a validator, service provider or ordinary investor is carrying on a trade or business.

Robinhood Crypto account versus Robinhood Wallet

The custodial Robinhood Crypto account and the self-custody Robinhood Wallet are separate data sources. Moving assets between accounts you own generally is not a sale, but basis and acquisition date must follow the asset. Network fees paid in crypto are separate digital-asset dispositions.

On-chain wallet swaps, bridge transactions, NFT activity and DeFi interactions may not appear on the custodial Robinhood 1099-DA. Import the relevant wallet addresses and decode transaction logs. A visible outbound transfer from Robinhood is not evidence that the later wallet activity was tax-free or already included on the form.

Likewise, an inbound deposit is not new income simply because Robinhood first sees the coin that day. Identify whether it came from an owned wallet, another person, a reward, a purchase, a gift or a business payment. Each source can have a different basis rule.

Robinhood crypto sales, securities and derivatives must stay separate

The consolidated PDF can contain Form 1099-B for securities, Section 1256 information for qualifying contracts, Form 1099-DA for digital assets and other forms. Do not import the same combined PDF through multiple modules and create duplicate income.

Robinhood-listed stocks, options or event contracts are not converted into cryptocurrency merely because they share the app. Conversely, a crypto sale does not inherit stock wash-sale reporting just because it appears beside securities. Apply the form and substantive rule for the actual asset.

Robinhood crypto filing workflow

  1. Download the consolidated 1099, crypto CSV and all corrected versions.
  2. Import every other exchange and self-custody wallet used during or before the year.
  3. Connect own-wallet transfers and carry verified basis and holding period.
  4. Reconcile Form 1099-DA gross proceeds to the Robinhood CSV.
  5. Calculate missing basis and classify short- versus long-term lots.
  6. Report capital-asset dispositions on Form 8949 and Schedule D.
  7. Report staking and other reward income on the form appropriate to the activity.
  8. Review the Form 1040 digital-asset question using current IRS instructions.
  9. Check state reporting and conformity separately.
  10. Retain forms, statements, hashes, basis evidence and reconciliation notes.

A CoinTaxReporting U.S. report can prepare Form 8949/Schedule D working papers while keeping missing basis visible. Follow the U.S. crypto filing workflow and compare the output with a sample report before filing.

Frequently asked questions

Does Robinhood issue Form 1099-DA for crypto?

Yes. For 2025 dispositions, Robinhood moved custodial crypto sales from Form 1099-B to Form 1099-DA.

Why does my Robinhood deposit show zero basis?

Robinhood does not receive historical basis automatically with a blockchain transfer. Reconstruct the acquisition from the sending exchange or wallet and use the verified amount on the tax return.

Does Robinhood report cost basis to the IRS for 2025?

Robinhood says only gross proceeds were reported to the IRS for 2025; basis shown to the customer was informational. Applicable covered-asset basis reporting phases in for later activity.

Are rewards below $600 tax-free?

No. The threshold relates to Form 1099-MISC issuance. Taxable reward income must be reported even without a form.

Is a Robinhood-to-wallet transfer taxable?

Not when ownership remains the same. Carry basis and holding period, and separately account for any network fee paid in digital assets.

Does the Robinhood 1099-DA include Robinhood Wallet swaps?

Do not assume it does. Self-custody on-chain activity is a separate data source and should be imported and reconciled independently.

Can I import the consolidated 1099 directly into TurboTax?

Robinhood supports document-ID imports into participating providers. You still must check import limits, transferred basis, external wallets and the imported totals.
