H&R Block Crypto Taxes in 2026: Import, Reconcile and File
H&R Block supports digital-asset returns, including Form 1099-DA, Form 8949 and Schedule D. Its documented Premium Online crypto workflow connects to CoinTracker, where users combine exchanges and wallets, resolve missing basis and then send finalized gains and losses back to H&R Block. That does not make every imported row correct. The taxpayer still must reconcile proceeds, basis, income and duplicate records before filing a 2025 return in 2026.
Short answer: does H&R Block handle crypto taxes?
Prepare Your Crypto Tax Workpapers
Import your transactions, review the results and generate detailed tax workpapers without building the entire calculation manually in spreadsheets.
Start for free →Yes. H&R Block’s current federal form list includes Form 1099-DA, Form 8949, Schedule D, Schedule 1 and Schedule C. Its 2026 crypto guidance covers sales, swaps, payments, receipts and the new broker-reporting form. H&R Block also offers Online, desktop software and tax-professional preparation, but the features and data-entry method are not identical across those products.
For a self-prepared complex crypto return, H&R Block documents a specific integration: Premium Online can connect to CoinTracker. The taxpayer first reconciles exchanges, wallets and Forms 1099-DA in CoinTracker, downloads Form 8949 and imports the finalized data into H&R Block. That is more precise than the old claim that any “H&R Block-compatible CSV” can simply be uploaded and the return is done.
| Filing path | Documented crypto use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Online + CoinTracker | Combine accounts, reconcile basis and import gains/losses | Unresolved or duplicated source data |
| H&R Block desktop software | Forms 1099-DA, 8949 and Schedule D are available | Assuming Online integrations work the same way |
| H&R Block tax professional | Professional prepares the return using supplied records | Providing only tax forms, not complete wallet history |
| Manual or summary entry | Small, fully reconciled sets of sales | Missing transaction-level attachment or wrong category |
Prepare the complete crypto record before H&R Block
Begin with all economic activity, not only the documents that arrived by mail. Form 1099-DA can cover broker dispositions but does not show every self-custody wallet, decentralized exchange, staking payout, NFT trade or foreign platform. The IRS requires taxable digital-asset income, gain and loss to be reported even when no information return is received.
- List every exchange, broker, wallet, chain address and payment app used in 2025.
- Download complete transaction histories and original Forms 1099-DA, 1099-B, 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC and W-2.
- Link withdrawals and deposits between accounts owned by the same taxpayer.
- Carry the historical acquisition date and adjusted basis through those transfers.
- Separate sales, crypto-to-crypto swaps, spending, rewards, service income, gifts and fees.
- Apply a consistent US-dollar fair-market-value policy.
- Reconcile gross proceeds to every broker information return.
- Resolve missing basis and unexplained deposits before generating Form 8949.
Keep raw exports unchanged and retain a reconciliation copy. Screenshots are useful for platform settings but should not replace machine-readable histories. The US crypto capital-gains guide explains dispositions, basis and holding periods.
How the H&R Block Premium Online crypto import works
H&R Block’s current partnership page gives an explicit 2026 process for Premium Online. It does not describe a generic direct connection to every exchange. Instead, H&R Block redirects the user to CoinTracker, which connects exchanges and wallets and then returns prepared tax information.
- Start the 2025 return in H&R Block Premium Online.
- Complete Personal Info and open the Income Hub.
- Select Cryptocurrency, then choose Connect to CoinTracker.
- Review the external service’s terms and privacy notice.
- Connect every relevant exchange and wallet in CoinTracker.
- Add any Form 1099-DA received and match it to the underlying activity.
- Resolve transfers, missing basis, duplicate records and transactions marked for review.
- Download the completed Form 8949 from CoinTracker.
- Use the import control to send finalized crypto tax information back to H&R Block.
- Upload the Form 8949 when prompted, finish the return and inspect the generated forms.
H&R Block describes this flow for transaction counts ranging from dozens into the thousands, but volume is not the same as complexity. A small wallet with bridges, liquidity positions and unidentified deposits can require more judgment than thousands of clean exchange fills.
Why “import successful” is not enough
- A transfer can be mistaken for a sale and a new acquisition.
- One sale can appear in both a Form 1099-DA import and a raw exchange history.
- Transferred-in units can have missing basis.
- Staking income can be omitted or later sold with zero basis.
- Unsupported DeFi activity can remain unclassified.
- Short- and long-term categories can be wrong when acquisition dates are missing.
Clear every unresolved item that affects the return. If the integration supplies only gains and losses, report ordinary-income items through the applicable H&R Block income interviews rather than forcing them into sales.
How to reconcile Form 1099-DA in H&R Block
Form 1099-DA reports proceeds from broker digital-asset dispositions and, in some cases, basis. H&R Block’s current guidance notes that the form applies beginning with 2025 activity filed in 2026. The IRS adds the crucial qualification: 2025 basis reporting generally was not required.
Do not confuse gross proceeds with profit
If Form 1099-DA shows $50,000 of proceeds, it does not mean $50,000 is taxable gain. Gain or loss requires the basis of the exact units disposed of plus applicable adjustments. A transferred asset may have been purchased years earlier on another platform. Trace it through owned-wallet movements rather than assigning zero.
Use the correct 2025 Form 8949 category
| Short / long | 2025 category | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| G / J | 1099-DA with basis reported | Broker reported basis to the IRS |
| H / K | 1099-DA without basis reported | Form reported the sale but not basis |
| I / L | No 1099-DA or 1099-B | Digital-asset sale was not broker-reported |
Digital-asset transactions should not be placed in the old stock categories C or F. Review the current IRS instructions and the Form 8949 crypto guide.
Correcting an information-return mismatch
- Compare asset, units, sale date and proceeds with source history.
- Determine whether the form is actually incorrect or only lacks basis.
- Request a corrected form from the issuer for incorrect reportable information.
- Keep the original form, correspondence and corrected form.
- Use the IRS Form 8949 adjustment instructions when a filing difference remains.
- Do not add an invented offsetting trade solely to force totals to match.
Staking, mining, airdrops and crypto received for services
H&R Block supports the federal schedules needed for ordinary and business income, but the correct location depends on what the receipt represents. The old statement that staking always goes to Schedule 1 is too broad. Nonbusiness ordinary income, independent-contractor income, employee wages and business mining are different categories.
- Staking rewards: generally measure income when dominion and control is obtained, then create basis in the rewarded units.
- Mining: determine whether the activity is a trade or business and whether self-employment tax applies.
- Services: employee compensation can be wages; independent-contractor receipts generally flow through Schedule C.
- Airdrops and incentives: analyze receipt, control and why the asset was distributed.
- Later disposition: selling an income-received asset creates a separate gain or loss from its established basis.
Reconcile Forms W-2, 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC with the raw reward or payment ledger. Absence of an information form does not create a tax exclusion. Conversely, the same receipt should not be counted twice because it appears in both a wallet import and Form 1099-MISC.
Review Form 8949, Schedule D and the digital-asset answer
Open the actual forms view before e-filing. Form 8949 should show or support the digital-asset dispositions, while Schedule D should contain matching category totals and any capital-loss carryover. A clean interview summary is not enough evidence.
- Reconcile Form 8949 proceeds with all Forms 1099-DA.
- Confirm basis, acquisition dates and short- or long-term classification.
- Check that categories G/H/I and J/K/L agree with broker reporting.
- Confirm no transaction appears through two imports.
- Reconcile Form 8949 totals to Schedule D.
- Confirm ordinary and business income is not buried in capital sales.
- Review any state-return treatment separately.
- Determine whether a transaction statement must accompany an aggregated filing.
The Form 1040 digital-asset question follows its own instructions. A taxpayer who only bought digital assets with US dollars, held them or transferred them between owned accounts can generally answer “No” if no listed receipt or disposition occurred. Sales, swaps, spending and reward receipts generally require “Yes.” The answer does not replace the tax schedules.
Premium Online, desktop or an H&R Block tax professional?
| Situation | Reasonable path |
|---|---|
| Clean exchange history and reconciled wallets | Premium Online integration can be efficient |
| Preference for locally installed software | Verify current desktop import features and available federal forms |
| Missing basis, multiple wallets or DeFi | Reconcile in specialized software before return preparation |
| Business mining, entity activity or prior-year errors | Consider a tax professional with digital-asset experience |
| IRS notice or disputed reporting | Seek qualified representation rather than relying only on an interview screen |
An office appointment does not remove the need for complete records. Give the preparer raw histories, the reconciled ledger, every information return, wallet ownership mapping, valuation method and unresolved-item list. Ask whether the preparer has reviewed the actual Form 8949 detail and not merely accepted a summary.

Common H&R Block crypto filing errors
- Assuming every CSV is directly accepted by H&R Block Online.
- Skipping reconciliation because CoinTracker connected successfully.
- Entering Form 1099-DA proceeds again after importing the same sales.
- Using zero basis for assets transferred from another platform.
- Treating all staking income as the same schedule classification.
- Leaving unclassified DeFi transactions outside the return.
- Using stock categories C/F for 2025 digital assets.
- Failing to upload or retain the supporting Form 8949 detail.
- Relying on a stale product price or tier comparison.
- Providing a tax professional only the broker forms and no wallet data.
Frequently asked questions
Can H&R Block file a return with crypto?
Yes. Its current federal form list includes Form 1099-DA, Form 8949 and Schedule D, and it offers Online, desktop and tax-professional preparation paths.
Does H&R Block directly import every exchange?
No such universal claim is documented. H&R Block’s current Premium Online workflow connects to CoinTracker, where exchanges and wallets are reconciled before results return to H&R Block.
Can I upload any crypto CSV to H&R Block?
Do not assume so. Use the currently documented integration or file type and validate the resulting Form 8949. A generic exchange CSV is not automatically a tax-ready gain/loss file.
Why is basis missing from my 2025 Form 1099-DA?
Brokers generally were required to report 2025 gross proceeds but not basis. Reconstruct basis from complete acquisition and transfer history.
Does H&R Block calculate DeFi taxes automatically?
Complex DeFi requires transaction classification and complete wallet data before return preparation. An import may leave uncertain transactions for review.
Where do crypto sales appear?
Investment dispositions generally appear on Form 8949 and flow to Schedule D, using the appropriate digital-asset reporting category.
Where do staking rewards appear?
The return location depends on whether they are nonbusiness income, business income or compensation. Use the facts and applicable H&R Block interview rather than a universal Schedule 1 shortcut.
Do I report crypto without Form 1099-DA?
Yes. The IRS requires all taxable digital-asset income, gains and losses to be reported regardless of whether an information return arrives.
